The Dubrovnik Summer Festival 2014
The Dubrovnik Summer Festival, Croatia’s oldest and most famous cultural event will be held for the 65th consecutive year from the 10th of July to 25th of August 2014. Dubrovnik lives for the summer festival. If one single event throughout the year is synonymous with the city then the Dubrovnik Summer Festival absolutely tops the list. Over a period of 47 days, the historic Old City of Dubrovnik, its palaces, fortresses, the island of Lokrum and many other spectacular locations near the Old City will become the unforgettable stages upon which more than 2,000 artists from around the world will perform. More than 100 musical and theatrical performances, including ballet, opera, folklore, and other genres, will delight and entertain visitors and locals. Although surrounded by walls of stone, Dubrovnik’s heart is dedicated to artistry. This living artistic spirit is sure to capture the heart of every visitor, as they fall in love with the city and its festival.
The festival begins with the traditional opening ceremony on the 10th of July in front of the Church of St. Blaise, followed by a spectacular fireworks show. In the days and weeks that follow, a wide variety of musical and dramatic performances will be presented.
This year’s festival will feature several new projects and has a touch from a few “old friends.” A premiere of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, one of the most beautiful love stories ever, will be held in a Renaissance summer residence, sure to be an atmospheric performance. And that’s not the only entry by the English bard as Shakespeare's Timon of Athens will also be performed.
On a musical front the world famous orchestra, the Bachorchestra of the Gewandhaus Leipzig, will perform Bach’s Brandenburg Concert. And keeping in a European feel the Italian Baroque will be represented by the Concerto de' Cavalieri ensemble under the leadership of Marcello di Lisa. And France isn’t forgotten with Le Concert Spirituel, the famous French vocal and instrumental ensemble performing under artistic directorship of Hervé Niquet. A real European feel to the Dubrovnik Summer Festival this season.
No summer visit to Dubrovnik is complete without the experience of the Dubrovnik Summer Festival – a magnificent collection of international arts and culture, featuring universally loved classics and emerging new artists in spectacular settings. This festival is a must for everyone who loves art and the spirit of artistic creativity.
